The Challenge

Rail and transport infrastructure facilities rely on compressed air to support maintenance operations, tooling, and supporting systems. Reliability is critical, and unplanned downtime can disrupt operational schedules.

At the Toowoomba site, Aurizon required:

  • Improved reliability through system redundancy
  • More efficient operation under normal load conditions
  • Reduction in system noise within the facility
  • Removal of redundant and outdated compressed air components

The existing setup included redundant materials and pressure vessels that no longer aligned with the site’s operational requirements.

The QCAS Approach

QCAS assessed the facility’s compressed air demand and identified that a dual-compressor configuration would deliver superior performance compared to a single large unit.

The scope of work included:

  • Installation of two compressors configured to operate together efficiently
  • Designing the system so both compressors could run at reduced load for improved efficiency
  • Providing built-in redundancy to protect operations in the event of a compressor outage
  • Removing redundant materials and outdated pressure vessels
  • Installing new, fit-for-purpose components aligned with current operational needs

This approach ensured the system operated closer to its optimal efficiency range while also reducing overall noise levels within the facility.

The Outcome

The upgraded compressed air system now provides Aurizon with a more reliable, efficient, and resilient solution at their Toowoomba site.

Key outcomes include:

  • Improved system reliability through dual-compressor redundancy
  • Increased energy efficiency by running two compressors at lower load
  • Reduced operational noise within the facility
  • Removal of obsolete equipment and pressure vessels
  • A system configuration better aligned with current and future operational demands

The project demonstrates QCAS’ ability to design practical, efficiency-driven compressed air solutions that prioritise reliability and long-term performance in industrial environments.
